Delightful Destination — Weekly Feature #395

Delightful DestinationThe first European colonists arrived in New Zealand in 1840. Only 16 years later the islands had effective self-government.

This early letter to New Zealand was mailed from Bath on June 3 1856 and endorsed “Australian Mail / June 3 / 56.”

It must have been in a closed bag because there is no Australian backstamp. There is an Auckland OC 13 1856 arrival handstamp.

A strip of 6 penny reds, perf. 14 with Large Crown watermark on bluish paper is lettered IA-IF.

This is not the complete folded letter but includes the front and the attached piece of the same dimensions with part of the original message and a partial English transit postmark. From the International Gold Medal Collection of Joseph Hackney.
