Letter from Venice to Alexandria
The earliest mail systems were organized for powerful rulers and for the military. A system was developed in the fifteenth century by Venetian merchants which served many parts of the Mediterranean. Stamp collectors read of this early postal service but rarely have the opportunity to buy one.
We offer this fairly lengthy letter dated 1419 from Venice to Alexandria. It shows the complete wax seal and part of the cord used to seal and tie the letter. It is in a remarkable state of preservation, and is still on the original exhibit page. Very fine.
