Ian Kimmerly Stamps -- January 2010 Cuba Special Listing

INTRODUCTION
It all started with this: Cuba, Imperforates, 1952-60 Three beautiful oversize sheet albums of Progressive Color Proofs and unissued imperforates, each identified by Scott no. (even though none of these varieties are listed). incl. sheets, singles and blocks some of the progressive proofs are Die, many of the proofs are Deluxe, wide range of topicals and themes, overall fresh and Very Fine, a phenomenal holding which is likely the bulk of the supply of these fascinating varieties. This lot is from a Robert A. Siegel auction in December 2009 and was one of hundreds of appetizing sounding lots and collections at the end of their spectacular public auction in New York City. Bidding over the internet and not having viewed, I had purchased some lovely single lots earlier in the sale and was focused on about a dozen of the large lots at the end. My budget would stretch to only one or at most two of these and I was fortunate to buy the Cuba lot that was at the top of my list. When it was received it exceeded my expectations. The lot contained just over 100 Die Proofs and just under 9000 plate proofs. We itemized the entire holding for interested philatelists (available here). All the stamps issued (and unissued) were printed in Cuba including the 1958 Felipe Poey set in five colours that represents the first use of polychrome techniques in printing a stamp. The progressive proofs of these are fascinating. All other stamps are engraved. One can infer that the strongest probability of how these came onto the market is that they originate from the printer's archive. Very few (ranging from none, one or two, up to about five) of the proofs were apparently sold or given away. These are apparently new to the philatelic market. They are an opportunity to add to a collection whether of Cuba, or thematic. Once sold it is quite likely there will be no more available.

The plate proofs were mostly in full panes, with some in a pane missing a pair or a block of four. We have indicated which items are still available as a full pane of 20, 40, or 50 subjects. Otherwise we can usually supply almost a full pane or any combination including large multiples, blocks of four, or, if you prefer, pairs or singles. In general, blocks of four are priced at $35, pairs are $20 and singles $10; blocks priced at $49 have pairs at $30 and singles at $15; blocks at $59 have pairs at $35 and singles at $18. All items are fresh; all are imperforate; all are never hinged, unless specifically described otherwise. Die Proofs are priced individually. The images are stamp size plus but the Die Proofs are uniformly 6 inches by 6 inches (about 15.3 cm square) except for the Felipe Poey butterflies which are 4.25 (vertical) inches by 4 inches (about 10.7 by 10.3 cm),.
