Seychelles

The Seychelles are a group of islands in the Indian Ocean. Uninhabited when discovered by Europeans, they became a separate Crown Colony in 1903. Before then, they were a dependency of Mauritius which lies some 1400 kilometers south of the Seychelles. The first Post Office was opened in 1861 and the first Seychelles stamps were issued in 1890. From 1861 to 1890 the first stamps of the Seychelles were the issues of Mauritius which can be identified by the postmark B64. These are listed in the Gibbons catalogue and in the Scott Classic as issues of the Seychelles with catalogue numbers and values.
The stamp we are featuring is Scott A33 (U.S.$100) or S.G.#Z40 (##95). The stamp is well centered and attractive with a bold postmark. Unfortunately this stamp has a small hinge thin near the AUR of Mauritius.
