SIX PENCE VIOLET EMBOSSED
Great Britian's high values (the 6d, 10d and one shilling) wre first issued seven years after the penny black and two penny blue. They are embossed and were struck individually which resulted in only a very tiny proportion having 4 full margins. Today's offering is a six penny with 3 very large margins and a fourth clear to touching. It is also in the much scarcer violet shade. We illustrate a second cut-to-shape example for comparision. The purple, mauve and lilac shades list in Stanley-Gibbons at £525-£550, while the violet lists at £1000. Unfortunately this otherwise attractive example has a serious horizontal crease in the bottom quarter of the stamp, which shows through the front. The crease makes this stamp much more affordable.
