For the week of January 2nd - 9th, 2002
4 x DOLLAR CHAMPLAIN RATE
This week we offer a piece of canvas approx.15 cm high by 17 cm wide with 4 One dollar Champlains affixed with glue because the dextrine gum would not hold the stamps to the canvas. The canvas piece is large enough to have a full address with Nanaimo Oct 25 1938 postmark and the Registered markings. This package which was almost certainly have been for the payrolls of the lumber mills in the Duncan area explained in a note by the previous owner from whose collection it came. Quite possibly the package contained enough money that in today's purchasing power it was over a million dollars. Certainly it would have weighed a great deal to require this much postage in 1938. A very rare item. WF86 | ||
