We purchase a collection of some sort almost every day, and over the course of a year, the average is just under 2 purchases per day. These range from childhood albums of minimal value to large estates; they range from very very ordinary to, on occasion, quite interesting. Some of the most memorable are not necessarily expensive. About 20 years ago a Canadian who had been living in Guyana in the early 1980s brought in thousands of used Guyanese stamps from this period. This is the period when the Post Office overprinted hundreds of obsolete stamps to meet postal requirements. After purchasing the lot, I spent several hours enjoying the challenge of matching overprinted, often re-overprinted, occasionally re-re-overprinted to the then rudimentary catalogue listings, I didn¹t pay much for this lot, and didn¹t charge much, but these now reside in a number of collections.
This week we purchased a small lot which included a half stockbook of mint never hinged Guyana just before and during the overprint period.
Obviously the Post Office had large quantities of the low value revenue stamps and beginning in 1981 they overprinted these as definitives for postal use. In addition to a surcharge of value (in varying colours) the overprint crossed out revenue and added the patriotic "Essequibo is ours". Our feature of the week is the complete definitive set of 38 (Scott #501-538) (S.G. #940-976) with 2 extra coloured surcharges for the 25 cent value.
