COVER OR BLOCK
This Friday we purchased a small lot which included an oversize envelope which enclosed a discharged mortgage and was mailed from Toronto Dec 2, 1874 with Colonial Trust Corporation Toronto wax seal. The letter was registered (2 cents postage) and was 9 times the basic domestic rate paid by a three cent and a block of six cent stamps. All are perf 11 1/2 by 12 and are tied by a straight line registered postmark.
While the deed is in good shape, the envelope is not. Many "postal historians" will turn their noses up because this cover is difficult to Exhibit.
The stamps however are another matter. The 2 cent and 3 cent are ordinary (CV is $33 for F-VF); but a used block of #39b is something special. Basic catalogue value for 4 F-VF singles is $200. The Canada Specialized prices a used block of this stamp as 24 times the single price giving this block a catalogue values of $1200.
Our price for this envelope and deed is $595 for this price we will soak off the block or cut out the block on piece to include the date if the buyer of the block is emotionally unable to destroy this cover. (Of course it might sell to a postal h9istorian who will restore or repair the cover and treasure this scarce rate).
