BROOKE SARAWAK

The history of the emergence of the British colony of Sarawak is one of the more interesting of all European Imperialism.
In 1839 Englishman James Brooke sailed his own yacht to Singapore and was asked by the governor to convey the thanks of the British Government to the uncle of the Sultan of Brunei for helping shipwrecked British sailors.
Rajah Muda was so impressed with James Brooke that a year later Brooke was invited to become Rajah of Sarawak. He accepted and spent the early years as Rajah quelling piracy, opium dealers and other undesirables. His success in restoring order led to the granting of significantly more territory to Sarawak.
The first stamps were issued in 1869, but the "local" stamps were only valid to Singapore. Letters going further needed stamps of the Straits Settlements. That situation continued until 1897 when Sarawak was admitted to the UPU.
The stamps of Sarawak are notable among British colonies because no portrait of the British monarch was shown until the 1948 Silver Wedding Anniversary stamps. From 1869 until 1948 stamps showed Sirjames Brooke, his son Charles Johnson Brooke, and his grandson Charles Vyner Brooke.
In 1892 there was a shortage of One cent stamps and three cent stamps were overprinted one cent . For this week's feature we offer this Exhibition quality marginal block of six, fresh with original never hinged gum. The middle stamp at right is the scarce no period after cent (SG prices a hinged single at 200 GBP).
