Weekly Feature #309 For the week of January 13th - 20th, 2007
RUSSIAN RUBLES Usually our weekly features show off an attractive stamp. This week we show off an especially ugly cover. The envelope is reasonably small and the original enclosure is missing. It was received in New York on April 15, 1922. Attached to the back of the envelope are 110 stamps. Attached first to the back of the envelope is a sheet comprising 2 panes of 25 of Scott #183; attached to that sheet is a second sheet of 50; and attached to that is a block of 10. Total postage is 27,500 rubles. The stamps were issued in 1921 at the beginning of an inflationary period. In early 1922 some stamps were overprinted with denominations as high as 5000 rubles and a few months later a high value of 100,000 rubles was necessary. Our scan of the stamps when folded out shows the stamps warts and all. While singles of the 250 rubles have little value, an explanation of the sheets of 50 shows that the two panes of 25 were printed upside-down in relation to each. Tete-beche pairs of this issue have a catalogue value of US $20 and on cover they have to be much scarcer. There are 10 pairs of these valuable items and they have survived in better shape than many of the other stamps. Our price for this weekıs feature is:
