Weekly Feature #355 For the weeks of April 12th - 19th, 2008
RAILWAY RARITIES The Australian states had a long tradition of issuing railway and parcel stamps. These collectible stamps have a greater claim to collecting respectability than many current new issues of postage stamps. Perhaps surprisingly it was sparsely populated Queensland which first introduced these fascinating issues in 1872; Victoria in 1876; and South Australia in 1885 followed. New South Wales waited until 1891. This week we offer four values from the first series of South Australia. The image shows the front of a railway locomotive. These come from a large collection of Australian railway and parcel stamps we recently purchased.
