Weekly Feature #357 For the weeks of May 3rd - May 10th, 2008
SCARCE SCOTIAN My policy is to not bid on faulty stamps. But sometimes an item has appeal despite the faults. This week we feature a bisect on a large enough piece that both the British Philatelic Association (1974) and the V.G. Greene (2007) have issued certificates declaring it to be genuine. The original envelope was mailed August 23 1860 from Halifax and was received in London on Sept 3. The rate was seven and a half pence; but Nova Scotia issued only four denominations - one, three and six penny and one shilling, the only way to prepay the exact rate was by using a bisect. A full envelope with a bisected three penny has a catalogue value of $6000 and is rarely offered. The right hand stamp has a serious crease and the left-hand stamp has a tear into the margin. The V.G. Greene Certificate uncharitably describes "Stamps heavily oxidized". Despite these faults, I would put this in my collection until I found or could afford better.
